Marian Kleist landscape

Personally and professionally, Marian has long been committed to improving the lives of woman and girls. Her very first job was a community development role at YWCA, in a lower decile neighbourhood. This set Marian’s direction for the rest of her working life. Social justice, particularly for women, became her calling.

Marian trained as a social worker. She worked in women’s health, as a probation officer, and supporting victims of sexual abuse, asylum seekers and victims of crime. She is a member of the NZ Parole Board.

In addition to service delivery roles and organisations, Marian has long advocated for women’s rights and empowerment. This includes pushing for abortion rights and pay equity, and supporting the Union movement.

Marian’s considerable experience is invaluable in our governance. She understands the challenges faced by communities and community service organisations. She brings a very practical eye and breaks perceived problems down to more manageable levels. She is a strong communicator and not afraid to ask difficult questions.
