Verifying your identity and address
Before you can make a Good Loan application, you need to verify your identity and address.

You can verify your identity and address electronically or in-person.
If you are applying for a Good Loan by phone and email, you can verify electronically using APLYiD or in person with your local Justice of the Peace (JP).
If you are applying for a Good Loan in-person you can verify at the same time. You will need to bring your original identification documents to your appointment.
Verify electronically
APLYiD is a fast, simple and secure electronic platform you can use to provide biometric identity verification and the AML/CFT Act compliance required for Good Loans.
APLYiD will verify your identity on your mobile phone in minutes with no app download required. This is done by taking a photo of your passport or driver licence, taking a selfie video to confirm identity against the I.D. document, and checking your name and birthdate against relevant databases.
Once you have completed the verification process, an APLYiD report will be securely provided to Good Shepherd NZ.
How to use APLYiD
Have your current New Zealand passport or driver licence ready, your phone charged and enough data and time to finish once you have started.
If you agree to using APLYiD, we will send you a link which can be used to complete the process. To protect your privacy your information is only stored if the process is completed, so if the process isn’t finished click the link to start again from the beginning and complete it all at once.

Step 1 – consent to sharing your personal information
We will send you a link via text (or via email, if needed).
On a smartphone (or other device which connects to the internet and has a front and rear camera), click on the link, read the privacy information, tick the consent statement and select ‘Continue’ to consent to sharing your personal information.
If you have any questions, please contact the APLYiD support centre on 0800 969 300 for assistance. This contact number will be provided on the link you are sent.
Step 2 – confirm your address
Enter your current residential address, or you select the correct address from the options search list.
Step 3 – take a photo of your I.D.
Take a photo of your Driver Licence or Passport by allowing APLYiD to use your current location to capture your I.D.
Use your phone camera to take a clear, crisp photo of the whole of the I.D. (without fingers covering any of it, or any shadows or light glare on the I.D.) – you can retake the photo several times to get a clear image.
APLYiD reads the photo and records image text like name and date of birth, and poor quality images may mean APLYiD can’t identify you.
Step 4 – review your I.D. data and confirm it is correct
Review your personal details and check carefully that all the details, particularly your first name, middle name, last name and date of birth, are exactly the same as on your identification.
Edit your details if corrections are needed, because if they do not match your I.D., APLYiD will not be able to verify your identity.
Once your data is correct, confirm the details so APLYiD can check your name and date of birth against several databases to confirm your identity and whether you are a Politically Exposed Person (PEP).

Step 4A – when using a driver licence only
Take a photo of the back of your driver licence to get the expiry date, and confirm your I.D. data is correct
This is a repeat of steps 3 and 4 but taking a photo of the back of your driver licence before a final careful check that all the data taken from the images of your I.D. are exactly the same as on your identification.
Once the information matches your I.D. exactly, confirm your details are correct and proceed to step 5.
Step 5 – liveness face verification
Make sure there is no strong light casting shadows across your face and remove any hats or sunglasses you are wearing – dark shadows or lighting glare can make it difficult to match the video and I.D. photos, but you can repeat the video if there are issues.
Select ‘allow’ to take a video selfie on your phone showing your face in the frame on the screen, then giving a big smile.
APLYiD biometrically matches your video selfie with your identification photo and checks that the information is correct against official data sources.
What happens when you have finished APLYiD
An APLYiD report is provided to your Good Loans Advisor or Financial Wellbeing Coach. They will contact you to continue the loan application process if verification was successfully completed, or to discuss any verification issues.
Tip
If APLYiD has verified most, but not all, of your identity and address information, we may have a simple workaround to help you complete the APLYiD verification process. Your Good Loans Coach or Financial Wellbeing Advocate will talk you through anything you need to do
Frequently asked questions
What kind of phone/device and phone plan do I need to use APLYiD?
Any smartphone with a front and rear camera and the ability to connect to the internet will be able to do a APLYiD verification. The process can also be completed on another device with these features, such as a tablet, if the link can be accessed on that device.
The link can be sent to a phone number or an email address
How much data does it use to do APLYiD?
The APLYiD process can be completed in a few minutes. All you need to do is enter your address, take a photo of your identification document, confirm the scanned details are correct, and record a short video of yourself.
How many times can I use the APLYiD link?
The link is available until accessed but will expire after 7 days. Each link can only be used once and the process must be completed in one go.
This is because your private information is not saved if you don’t complete the verification process. If you don’t finish the process and close the page, click the link you were originally sent and you can start the process again from the beginning.
Contact your Good Loans Advisor or Financial Wellbeing Coach if you need them to send you the link again.
How do you access my personal information?
We can only access your personal information with your permission. APLYiD compares your image from your scanned document with your video selfie and against registers such as the Driver Licence database. These are all secure connections to keep your information safe.
Where is my personal information stored and how do I know it is secure?
APLYiD is certified as achieving ISO standards, and holds data in a secure Sydney based environment using Amazon Webservices. Your consent gives only Good Shepherd New Zealand access to your information for Good Loans.
APLYiD will delete your data shortly after your Good Loans Coach or Financial Wellbeing Advocate downloads your APLYiD report, or after a maximum of 7 days.
Can other organisations get a copy of my personal information?
No – you have only given Good Shepherd New Zealand consent to access your personal information and we can only use it for the purposes stated in our Privacy Statement.
How can I protect my personal information from third party access?
Know who you are providing personal information to and the reasons why. Only click on links when you expect to receive them and never reveal your passwords. The privacy information includes who will get access to your personal information and for what purposes. It should be clear and easy to understand.
Can I get a copy of my APLYiD report?
All consumers can request access to the information held about them at Good Shepherd NZ. You can ask your Good Loans Advisor or Financial Wellbeing Coach for a copy.
Who are APLYiD?

Verify in-person with a local Justice of the Peace
If you don’t have a current New Zealand passport or driver licence, or you don’t use a smartphone or similar device, you can verify your identity and address by visiting your local Justice of the Peace (JP).
There may be other circumstances where you will need to verify your identity at a JP – e.g., where your name is too long to fit in the name fields to verify identity electronically, or if your legal name has changed and your I.D. doesn’t match then a JP can verify other documents to confirm the name change.
Your coach or advocate will provide you with a ‘JP instructions letter’ to follow.
You will need to:
- Take clear, legible copies of your original identification documents. Make sure you copy both sides where needed.
- Take the copies and originals to your local JP, along with the JP instructions letter
- The JP should follow the instructions letter, sign it and then sign each copy of your identification documents. This certifies as true the copies of your identification, confirm that you presented your own identification in person, and that your identification provides a true likeness.
- Scan the signed copies of the JP instructions letter and identification documents, and email them to your coach or advocate.
Tip
You may find copy, print and scanning services at your local library. This may be a convenient place to meet with your JP at the same time.
